A total of 2,977 victims died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, not including the 19 hijackers. 

 

Breakdown by Location

• World Trade Center (New York City): 2,606 people died at the Twin Towers and surrounding area, including civilians and first responders. 

• The Pentagon (Virginia): 184 people died, consisting of 125 people inside the building and 59 passengers and crew on American Airlines Flight 77. 

• Shanksville, Pennsylvania: 40 passengers and crew died on United Airlines Flight 93 after the hijackers crashed the plane into a field. 

 

Additional Casualties

• First Responders: 441 emergency workers (including firefighters, police officers, and paramedics) were among those killed on the day of the attacks. 

• Total with Hijackers: Including the 19 al-Qaeda hijackers, the total death toll for that day was 2,996. 

• Long-Term Illnesses: Thousands more people have since died from toxic dust and 9/11-related illnesses contracted while working or living near the disaster sites.
